Let me begin by saying fathers have a three-fold ministry. And it is for the benefit of their sheep -wife and children. As head of your family, you are a father to your wife and children. There is so much more to being a seed carrying agent. It is not sufficient for you to say that you are the father of your children or husband to your wife. The question that must put you to task is how well have you carried out the functions of a godly father?
Studying the Scriptures in First Thessalonians chapter two, you will learn the ministry of your fatherhood role. As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doeth his children. That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory (1 Thess.2:11-12). From this Bible passage, three actions are evident. They are exhortation, comforted and charged. As ye know how we EXHORTED and COMFORTED and CHARGED everyone of you as a FATHER DOTH HIS CHILDREN.
So, how do you exhort, comfort and charge your wife and children? As a father, you must strongly encourage your sheep to do what is pure, lovely and goodly. You must teach them and help them to think and act righteously everywhere they go. They must seek all the virtues of Christ. That is what exhortation demands from you. However, the motivation that your wife and children will need to be encouraged to be good and godly vessels is your lifestyle. If you have not conducted yourself as a good and godly husband, it will be very difficult for them to trust and follow your advice. To comfort your sheep requires that you help them overcome their challenges, pains and failures. As a father, you do not disrespect and abuse your child when he or she is struggling with some academics challenges. Rather, what you can do is to help him or her by interceding. And lastly, you inspire confidence in your wife and children that they can become the best in everything they do. It matters less how many times they may have failed.
But for you to perform this three-fold assignment, you must take charge and refuse to be influenced negatively by culture, ungodly friends and relationships. Do not be ashamed that you are the head. You must not look or act like someone who is being begged to be a father or lacking in knowledge of what to do. Secondly, you must act responsibly. This means you must do all things decently and in order bringing glory to God. Thirdly, you must contend for your position as a husband in fasting and prayers. Prayer does not only empower you, it also generates wisdom that puts you in control. You must stop behaving like a garage tout. Fatherhood is your glorious heritage, let it count for your wife and children.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
· Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to fulfill my calling as a father to my wife and children.
· Father, in the Name of Jesus, give me the wisdom to accept responsibility for my wife and children.
· Father, in the Name of Jesus, make my life an acceptable and living sacrifice to my sheep.
FAITH CONFESSION
I am empowered by God to function as a motivator, encourager and inspiration to my wife and children because that is what makes me a good and godly husband in Jesus Name. Amen.
