Main Scriptures: Colossians 3:10-14

More Scriptures: Jer.43:12, Ezk.18:7, Ac.1:10

I think this may be interesting to every husband. During my wife’s younger sister’s wedding sometime ago, my children asked for new dresses that they will wear to the occasion. It is not for lack of dresses but because they will be meeting with their old cousins and friends. Of course, by the grace of God, I bought the dresses and they looked very beautiful in them. This is exactly what God expects from you as the head of the family. You need to wear a new dress after the order of godliness. Just the same way my children were passionately desiring new dresses for an occasion that is organized by man, it is also very important for you to crave to have a new dress on you all the time at the banquet organized by the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

But you may want to ask what the dress should look like. This dress is your attitude. God is not asking you to put on a physical dress, but an attitude dress. I called it the A-Dress. This A-dress that you have been commanded to wear is about your attitude towards your wife, children and the society. In Col.3:12, the Bible gave the kind of dresses that you are expected to wear. In verse 10, it says put on. What then are you to put on? It says wear the garment of tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, long suffering, bearing one another, a forgiving of one another, holiness. You are the head of the family and your life must reflect the nature of God in you. If you always want your wife and children to love doing the right things to all people and, do good and live an example of goodness for them to see. If you want to experience kindness from your sheep, then show kindness to them. If you expect mercies from others show mercies to others also. However, for you to be able to live out these virtues as you lead your wife and children, you must desire these attitudes and follow it up by praying them into your life. Prayer is not just for asking for material things from God, it is also a channel of living out the life of Christ. The Scriptures say that I pray that the life of Christ be FORMED in YOU. So, you can form these attitudes of Christ in you. Do not merely wish to have these virtues. You must give yourself to praying down these traits into your life.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, by the blood of Jesus Christ, remove every ungodly dress I have worn over the years.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, put on me the dress of righteousness and holiness
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, make my life a living example to my wife and children

FAITH CONFESSION

I put on a new dress pleasing unto God because I want to be a godly husband to my wife and children in Jesus Name. Amen.
