HIS IMAGE AND HIS LIKENESS

Spread the love

Main Scriptures: Gen.1:26-28

More Scriptures: 1Jn.4:16, Ps.119:11, Eph.3:19

And God said, let us make man in OUR IMAGE, after OUR LIKENESS and the let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air and over the cattle, and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth (Gen.1:26)

Reading from the above Scripture, you will discover that when God made you, He had two objectives in mind. The first is that He wants you to have His image and secondly, He wants you to act like Him. So, you are not just a god, you are like God (Ps. 82:6, Jn.10:34). It is one thing for a car have the image of a brand, it is another thing for that car to act like the brand.

Now that is exactly the life that God wants you to live. He doesn’t just want you to be seen as the good and godly husband. He wants your words, your thought, your conversations, your reactions and responses to your sheep and those around you to reflect His nature. It is the combination of his image and function that gives value. A car may look like a car. But its real value is appreciated if it is put in motion, fulfilling the purpose of its creation. That is the way of Jesus Christ for you. It is very important to understand that the “Our” in the Genesis 1 and verse 26 talks about God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Hence, as the good and godly husband it is not enough to profess to your wife and children how much God you have. It is much more important for them to see you function as Jesus Christ would.

So, the question is this. What is the image and likeness of God? You are the image of God. Your physical being is a testimony of the greatness of God. And the likeness of God is the character of God. And that character is summarized in 1 Corinthians chapter 13 and verses 4 to 8. God is kind, compassionate, merciful, gracious, patient, truthful, honest, faithful, helper, provider, a defender and so much more.  The Bible also confirms that God is love (1Jn.4:16). And if you are in love, you are practically demonstrating the likeness of God. Therefore, do you behave like Christ to your sheep?

But for you to be like Jesus Christ to your sheep, you must have a personal relationship with Him. The Bible says that without me you can do nothing (Jn.15:5). You must also desperately pray for the outworking of the Person of the Holy Spirit in your life. I will send the Comforter, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all things (John 14:26). You must continually feed on the word of God as a lifestyle. Thy word have I hid in my heart that I may not sin against thee (Ps.119:11). Let your wife and children have first-hand experience of the image and likeness of Jesus Christ in you.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to reflect Your image and act like You would to my sheep.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, teach me Your ways and help me to walk in it.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, let Your word purge me from sin and let it destroy self and deceit in my life.

FAITH CONFESSION

I am the image of God and I act like Jesus would to my wife and children because that is my nature as the good and godly husband in Jesus name. Amen.
