Main Scriptures: Hebrews 10:19-21

More Scriptures: Jn.10:9, Rom.6:4, Matt.9:16

One of the lessons of being a shepherd is that there is always room for improvement. Many husbands are not having it easy with their wives and children because of the mind set they (husbands) grew up with. Some of the husbands have become uncaring to their wives and children, not because they don’t care but because of the wrong perception they grew up with- culture and tradition. You must understand that no matter how much you think you know or the knowledge you have grown up with as the husbandman, there is always a better way to live as the godly man, husband and father. And that is what the Scripture is encouraging you to know. By a new and living way which hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh. (Heb.10:20).  God wants to show you a better way to live and lead your sheep.

But what is that way that is better? It is the way of the Lord Jesus Christ. The word of God describes Him as the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE (Jn.14:6). As the good shepherd, following the way of Jesus Christ is what helps you to become like Him to your wife and children. Are you not tired of the continued troubles you are having with your wife and children? Has it not occurred to you that your approaches and methods you are used to in handling your wife and children are not working? Jesus has a better way for you. Remember that He is the way, the truth and the life. He has a much more improved plan and strategies for you. For example, His word says be slow to speak and quick to hear (Jas.1:19). Here, God is saying you must learn not to respond to everything that your wife and children say. You must learn to exercise restraint. Your being quiet doesn’t make you a fool as the world would think. Rather, it demonstrates your spiritual maturity as the head of the family. This is why Scriptures say you are men of few words (Eph.3:3). Another example of a new and living way of dealing with your child is by giving him or her adequate attention. This will help you to feel their pulses and make the needed changes they require to become better people. You are the first mentor of your child and not their school teachers or Sunday school teachers or wife. God sent them to you to influence them unto godliness. This is why in Deut.6 and Eph.6, it specifically placed the responsibility of nurturing your children on you. Therefore, it is time for you to review your methods and let God’s word influence and guide your actions. The word of God says this. Husbands, deal with thy wife according to knowledge so that your prayers may not be hindered (1Pet.3:7). That is a much better way to relate with your wife rather than beat her up or abuse her emotionally.

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, break the power of pride at work in my life.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, give me a teachable and quiet spirit.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, help me to know You and the power of Your salvation.

I have found from the word of God a new and better way of relating with my wife and children because that is what makes me the good and godly husband in Jesus Name. Amen.
