In the last few days, the Person of the Holy Spirit has taken us through the core of our existence as the shepherd of our sheep. And that at the root of our function as the godly man, husband and father is that we are givers; that we give love to our sheep. We learnt that we are to first and most importantly give spiritual nutrients to our sheep by first learning to be spiritual ourselves. Today, let us consider another virtue that the godly husbandman gives to his sheep because he loves them. And that is you give your time to your sheep.
I have discovered that spending time with our sheep equals love. The more quality time we invest into our sheep the deeper we know them and can feel their pulse. But when we do not consciously and deliberately invest our time for them, we create a gap. And if this gap is not quickly bridged, satan, sin and the world will take advantage and corrupt our sheep. So, until you can prove the time investment in your sheep, you are not truly in love. It is not true that you don’t have time for your wife and children. It doesn’t matter what you do for a living. You cannot work for 24 hours. Another secret is that you will never have enough time for anything. You can only create time for things you love. If you love your wife and children, you will make out time to interact, sit and listen to them. You must never substitute the value of time with things. Material things are good, but they do not fill the gap that your absence would create in the lives of your flock. You don’t have to travel out of town to be absent in the lives of your flock. Your wife doesn’t need you all day. She only needs a moment with you. Your children don’t want you to sit at home with them all day. They only need a moment of interaction with you. It could be just five minutes. It may even be ten minutes. Jesus had time with His disciples despite His busy schedules. His interaction with His disciples helped Him to understand their individual differences, strength and weakness.
Now what do you stand to gain when you give your time? First, you overcome the force of assumption in your decision. Investment of quality time in your relationship with your wife and children eliminates to the barest minimum assumptions. At the root of disagreement and misunderstanding between you and your flock is assumption. The second blessing is that it takes you deeper in love with your wife and children. One thing have I desired of the Lord that will I seek after that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life to behold the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple (Ps.27:4). You must desire a fellowship with your sheep if you want to make the most of your value in their lives.
