Main Scriptures: Gen. 2:18-19
More Scriptures: Num.14:28, Mk.11:23, Matt.12:37
And the Lord God said, it is not good that the man should be alone. I will make him a helpmeet for him. And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them. And whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof (Gen.2:18-19)
Let me begin by quoting an inspirational statement made by one of my greatest mentors, Dr. Myles Munroe of blessed memory. I would like to paraphrase. He said, “if you don’t like what have change what you give”. I want you to please note these words from the Scripture in Genesis chapter 2 and verse 19. …….God brought them to Adam to see what he would call them………. God has given you a wife and children. Whatever name you call them is your personal responsibility. By the reason of your position as the head of your sheep, God has entrusted you with the mandate to append a name to your wife and children. And this responsibility is not transferable to anybody not even your pastor, parents, friends, family members or neighbours. Note the second statement, ……whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof (Gen.2:19b). Your wife and children cannot respond to you much more than the names you call them. You cannot call your wife and children fools and expect them to respond to you wisely. You cannot call your children dullard and think they will act intelligently to you. You cannot call your wife stupid and expect her to respond to you, anything less.
This is very important because many husbandmen have complained about the attitudes of their sheep but have not reflected on what they have been calling their sheep. You must understand that your words are powerful. Your words can reframe the lives of your wife and children. Your words can motivate, inspire and empower your wife and children. That is the positives. On the negative sides, your words can kill the confidence and self-worth of your wife and children. Your words can destroy the wholeness of your sheep’s spiritual and emotional well-being. This is why you must be very careful what names you call your wife and children, even when you are upset or unhappy because what you call them is what they manifest to you. Your words are seeds and they are powerful.
As the good and godly shepherd, you must learn to say godly words to your wife and children. You must daily seek your Bible and be familiar with the words of God so that you can be guided on what to say. You must also depend on the help of the Person of the Holy Spirit to remind you of God’s word. I will send the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all things (Jn.14:26).
- Father, in the name of Jesus, open my eyes and ears to see and hear from Your word, Your promises for my wife and children.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, sanctify my tongue.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, guide my heart and tongue to speak Your will and promises to my wife and children always.
I give attention to the Word of God so that I know His promises for my wife and children and speak same to them because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
