Bible Texts: Gen.1:28, Rom.12:15, 1Cor.15:10, Ps.139:14, Job 29:15, Gen.2:5
Yesterday, we started this teaching by looking at the first enemy within every husbandman-low self esteem. Today let us consider the second enemy. The second enemy you must deal with is the enemy of superiority complex. This enemy makes you overestimate yourself. It makes think you are better than everybody and leads you to be arrogant and proud. It makes you too high to listen to counsel. This enemy makes you feel you are too big to physically, mentally and emotionally support your wife and children. It makes you have the master-slave mentality towards your sheep. But Jesus Christ, the perfect example of the good and godly husbandman, gives this advice to you and I. He said, I am from above, you came from the earth…..(Jn.8:23). Jesus knew His worth but He did not rub it on the faces of His sheep. Apostle Paul further helped you and I to understand this truth when he declared, I am what I am by the grace of God……(1Cor.15:10).
As the head of the family, you must be very careful of this enemy. A lot of husbandmen have gone astray because of this enemy. They refuse to learn, take corrections and make amends. These shepherds are always right in their own eyes while every other person is wrong. As the good and godly shepherd, you must learn to listen to your wife and children. You must be accessible to the extent that they can correct you when you are wrong, advises you when they think you need it and caution you when they observe you are crossing or about to cross the lines. This is humility. The Scripture says of Jesus Christ, even though He was God, He humbled himself even unto death (Philippians 2:6-7).
This enemy called superiority complex makes you uncomfortable when others are making progress because you think you are the only one who must succeed. This enemy leads you to develop badwill towards your wife and children. These tendencies make you oppress your wife and children, making them not rise above you. This is not the will of God for you as the god and godly husbandman.
So, how do I deal with this enemy? Firstly, you must walk in the consciousness of who you, where you are from and what you are worth from the word of God. You are a priest and a prophet (Num.6:22). You are also a pastor (Eph.6:4, 1Tim.3:2-5). Secondly, you must seek and continue to seek to know and rediscover your identity in Jesus Christ so that you do not get lost in the midst of the noise, pressure and challenges of life. Jesus speaking said, and ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free (Jn.8:32). The more you study the word of God, the more you discover and rediscover your identity in Christ. Thirdly, you must engage the weapon of prayer and fasting. Prayer and fasting are a twin spiritual force that brings the power of God to bear in your affairs. This kind goeth not forth except by prayer and fasting…… (Mk.9:29). It destroys ungodly tendencies. Finally, you must remain small in the eyes of God by having a heart of humility.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, forgive me for thinking less of myself and for hurting my wife and children.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, open my eyes to discover my worth in Your word and help me live by it.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to rejoice with my wife and children when they succeed and weep with them when they experience challenges.
FAITH CONFESSION
I walk in the reality of who God says I am, where He says I am from and what He says I am worth because that is my heritage as the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
