TO LIVE LIKE CHRIST, IS LIFE

Spread the love

Bible Texts: Matt.20:20-23, Eph.5:22, Gal.4:19, Eph.6:4, Jn.10:11

Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him and desiring a certain thing of him. And he said unto her, what wilt thou? She saith unto him, grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. But Jesus answered and said, ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, we are able. And he said unto them, ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with, but to sit on my right hand and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my father (Matt.20:20-23)

The mother of Zebedee’s children approaches Jesus Christ and requests for something significant. She wants a change of position for her sons. She wants both sons to sit at the right and left side of God’s kingdom. But Jesus asked both the mother and her children one important question. Jesus asks, “can you drink of the cup that I drink of and can you be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? Literally, Jesus Christ told them that every great position comes with enormous responsibilities. And that speaks to your desire to want to exercise your authority as the head and shepherd over your wife and children and sheepfold.

The call to husbandhood is a desirable office. God created the office after He made man in His image and likeness. God said that, It is not good for man to be alone, I will make for Him a helpmeet…. God put the man to sleep and took a rib out of the man and formed a woman……And God brought the woman that He hath made to the man and Adam said this is now bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh…….For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh (Gen.2:18-24).

The day you decide to accept the office of the husbandhood is the day you are baptized into the same responsibilities that Jesus Christ was baptized into as the perfect example of the godly husbandman. And God wants you to live like Jesus Christ for your wife and children because that is life. The Bible describes Jesus as the husbandman. Husbands love thy wife as Christ has loved the Church (Eph.5:25). The same way Jesus has loved the church is the same you are commanded to love your wife and children. I am the good shepherd, the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep (Jn.10:11). Shepherds are labourers working continually to ensure that their sheep are provided for, protected, guided and nurtured.

So, what are you baptized into from our main text in Matthew chapter 20? You are baptized into faithfulness, fruitfulness, compassion, holiness, hospitality, the spirit of the fear of the Lord, a provider, protector, giver, a life of sacrifice and much more.

Therefore, take your rightful place as the good and godly shepherd in your sheepfold.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to take charge of my wife and children and sheepfold.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to do Your will as a shepherd to my wife and children.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to become a responsible man, husband and father to my wife and children.

FAITH CONFESSION

I drink of the cup of Jesus Christ and I am baptized with the baptism of Jesus Christ and by it I take full responsibilities for my wife and children because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
