DANGERS OF BAD COMPANY

Spread the love

Main Scriptures: 1 Cor.15:33

More Scriptures: Acts 4:31, Pro.28:1, Jos.1:9

Have you ever wondered why some husbandmen engage in certain unhealthy habits and lifestyles? The answer is because of the association they keep. And that is what I want us to consider today, as we learn God’s ways to becoming the good and godly husbandman.

As the head of your family, you cannot be innocent of the company you keep. You cannot stay around smoke and not smell smoke. This is what the Scriptures say in that regard. “Do not be deceived. Bad company ruins good morals. (1Cor.15:33) ESV. It does not matter how good you are as the good shepherd, if you surround yourself with the wrong people, you will soon be affected by their wrong values. And if you do not come out from amongst them on time, you will soon start manifesting negative tendencies towards your wife and children. There are many husbands that would never have thought of having extra-marital affairs or even abandon or physically abuse their wives, but for the reason of their association with wife-beaters and cheats, they indulge in it.

Few examples from the Bible speaks to the importance of association. Lot, Abraham’s nephew, associated with Abraham and consequently became prosperous. King David’s son surrounded himself with the wrong company and he raped his sister, Tamar. Peter stayed in the company of Jesus Christ and he was described as the rock. So, as the head of your family, you must redefine your relationship. I once heard Bishop David Oyedepo, one of my fathers in the faith, said that friendship is a choice and not a force. You decide who you want to walk with. And as a free moral agent, you have the power to select your friends and the power to drop those that are not adding value to your life.

But how do I redefine my relationship and keep my innocence? The first step is to ask the Holy Spirit to empower you with the Spirit of boldness and courage. This is what Joshua needed desperately to lead the children of Israel and to define the quality of relationship he wanted (Jos.1:5-8, Jos.24:15). Only God by His Spirit can give you the boldness to sever friendships that hurt your relationship with your wife and children. Secondly, you must cut-off anything that would link you with the relationship. For instance, you could stop calling or visiting them. Thirdly, you must keep your prayer altar burning (Rev.12:10). Remember that satan always goes about looking for who he will devour, hence Jesus warned that men should always pray and not faint …(Lk.18:1). And we should watch and pray…(Matt.26:41). Amos 6:1, warned about being spiritually complacent when it says, woe unto them that at ease in Zion (Amos 6:1). And Apostle Paul warned that let him that thinks he stands take heed least he falls…(1Cor.10:12).

Therefore, mind your company so that your life can count positively to God and the sheep (wife and children) of His pasture that He has committed into your hands.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, deliver me from ungodly associations and relationships.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me with the spirit of faith, boldness and courage to choose the right company and let go bad relationship.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, pour upon me the spirit of prayer and supplication and keep my prayer altar on fire.

FAITH CONFESSION

I have found a new way of living by the spirit of boldness and courage and I sever myself from ungodly relationships and associations and look for godly company because that is the influence I need to act as the good and godly husbandman to my wife and children in Jesus name. Amen.
