DAVID COMFORTED BATHSHEBA

Spread the love

Main Scriptures: 2Sam.12:23-24

More Scriptures: Is.43:19, Acts 10:38, Heb.12:1

But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him but he shall not return to me. And David comforted Bathsheba his wife and went in unto her and lay with her and she bare a son and he called his name Solomon and the Lord loved him (2Sam.12:23-24)

The Scripture above is the concluding part of the ungodly event that occurred between David and Bathsheba. David had a sordid affair with Bathsheba, who was initially the wife of one of David’s army officers. He organized the death of the officer and eventually married his wife. All of these events were not pleasant and he had every reason to see Bathsheba as his enemy and the source of all his pains. The death of the illegitimate son would have been a very strong point for him to throw his wife out of his home. He did not do that. He did not accuse his wife of being a seducer or a witch. He did not put all the blame at the doorstep of his wife just as many husbands do. Rather, he saw beyond the failures of both himself and his wife and let go. He comforted his wife.

That is exactly what God expects you to do to your wife and children. As the head of the family, there are times when your sheep would offend you. Sometimes their attitude causes you hurt and pain and you begin to think that there is nothing good that can come from them. But the Word of God says, comfort them even if they are at fault. This is what the Bible says. Forgetting the former things, behold, I will do a new thing (Is.43:19). As the shepherd over God’s sheep in your custody, you must learn to extend kindness and mercy to your sheep. You must continue to be the channel through which they can be transformed into good and godly followers. All through Scriptures, specifically in the times of Jesus Christ, who is the perfect example of the good and godly husband, He was always comforting people. When Lazarus died, He comforted his family. When Peter’s mother was sick, He healed her and did not remember that her son was disrespectful to Him. And this is why the Scripture says, how Jesus went about doing good and healing all that were sick (Acts 10:38).

Some of the ways you can comfort your sheep is by speaking words of assurance and not condemnation. You can also speak words of encouragement. You can also learn to embrace and hug them truthfully. But you must first do two things. You must forgive yourself and also forgive your sheep. Until you forgive yourself, you cannot enjoy the freedom to extend comfort to your wife and children. And this is why the Bible admonishes us to let go the sin that easily besets us Heb.12:1) According to Bishop T.D. Jakes, you must let go and let God.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, help me to look beyond the faults of my sheep.
  • Father in the Name of Jesus, forgive me for holding my wife and children in unforgiveness.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to comfort my sheep with kindness, compassion and mercy.

FAITH CONFESSION

I let go and let God, and comfort my sheep with compassion, mercy, forgiveness and patience because that is the virtue that makes me the good and godly shepherd in Jesus Name. Amen.
