THE FATHER’S LOVE

Spread the love

Main Scriptures: Luke 15:11-21

More Scriptures: John 14:23, John 15:13, John 10:17

Every time I reflect on these verses of Scriptures, I recollect the wonderful relationship I had with my late father. Although I lost him while in secondary school, my relationship with him has helped me to understand how to relate with my heavenly Father. And this has created a craving in my heart to want to please God, even though I still make mistakes and errors. Every husband has been ordained to be a responsible father to his children and wife. It is the fatherhood nature of the husbandman that gives value to his position as the head of his family and the good and godly shepherd that Jesus Christ wants represented to the sheep and the sheepfold.

The story in Luke 15:11-21 shows us how responsive the father of the prodigal son was towards his lost son. I will arise and go to my father and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before thee. And he arose and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him (Luke 15:18,20,21).  Although his son lived a riotous life, wasted his inheritance and resources, an indication that his son was foolish, yet the father did not give up on him. He continued to intercede for him. In verse 20, the word of God says that while the son was afar off, the father saw him. This was an indication that the father hoped against hope that his son would return home. He engaged the three-fold weapon of victory-intercession, faith and hope. Therefore, as the head of your family and the priest over your wife and children, you must extend the father’s love to your sheep. You are not just a husband who provides for his family, you are also a father, who loves his family dearly with the love of Jesus Christ-compassionate and forward looking. A father, whose arms are wide enough to embrace his wife and children when they hurt; and so wide as to accommodate their weaknesses, even at their worst times. A father whose mouth is quick to speak encouraging words even when everyone else or everything else seems to speak otherwise. That is who you are. So, when you truly act as a father, it helps your wife and children to see God as their Father and appreciate God’s benevolence in their lives. It also helps them to build confidence in the ability and capacity of God to answer them rather than run around like sheep without a shepherd. And finally, it gives them a sense of belonging-knowing that they belong to a heavenly family. They are not intimidated or distracted by the principles of the world nor feel less important among their peers. God has placed you as the head of your family to provide the needed platform for the good of their lives. You must make it count for God and your sheep.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, help me to understand Your nature as the Father.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, fill my heart with love and compassion toward my sheep.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, bless me richly as I give the father’s love to my wife and children.

FAITH CONFESSION

I have the Father’s love working in me and I extend the same love to my wife and children at all times and in all circumstances because that is what makes me the good and godly father in Jesus Name. Amen.
