And he led them out as far as to Bethany and he lifted up his hands and blessed them (Lk.24:50).
I want to encourage you to re-read this passage over and over again until it comes alive in your spirit man. This is because there is enormous power in residence in your hand when you extend it to bless your sheep. A lot of the times as husbands, we tend to lose sight of the relevance of our position as heads of our families. We just remain within the realm of a husband either by name or position, yet there is so much we can do that will command the attention of our wife and children. As the head of your family, you can switch from a priest to a pastor, from a pastor to a prophet and from a man to a mentor. And today’s devotional helps you to appreciate what your Perfect example did and how you can walk in that office as a husband.
There are two things that are significant in our main text today. The first is that someone led. And the person took the initiative as the leader to bless the people. So, the question you should answer is this. Who is leading in your sheepfold? Is it you or your sheep? The second is that hands were lifted, not to curse or hurt but to bless. As a husband, how often do you engage your hands to bless your wife and children? Are you aware that you are like Christ to your sheep? And everything that Jesus, the perfect example of the good and godly did was for your example as the shepherd. As a ministry, we have received so many testimonies of the power of lifted hands, stretching out to bless. For example, every day when my wife and children wake up to greet me, I responded with a blessing. I bless them. I can testify that I have enjoyed tremendous goodwill from my flock and outsiders. People admire my seed. You are leading your wife and children. You must release the prophetic unction of the blessings of God upon them. Don’t mind if you don’t see anything. Just keep blessing them.
Now, what does it mean to be blessed? It means to be empowered to function as God has said. So, when you lift your hands and bless your flock, you have only released the ability of God into their lives to make them function as God has ordained them to. However, you must be careful not to make this profession a religion. If don’t do it in faith, you will not experience the glory. In Heb.11:6, the Bible tells us that without faith it is impossible to please God. He that must come to Him must believe that He is and He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. The blessings you enjoy for engaging in this noble act is that they will worship and honour you. Secondly, your flock will continue to praise and bless the name of the Lord. It is more profitable to bless than curse. Make your choice!
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, deliver me from the power of wrong speaking.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, cleanse my tongue and let it please You in all things.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, give effect and power to my profession and declarations.
I lift up my hands to bless my wife and children because that is what makes me a good and godly husband in Jesus Name. Amen.
