Main Scriptures: 1Sam.18:21

More Scriptures: Matt.4:4, Job 32:8, Gen.2:7

Let us take the twenty-sixth capsule.

Now, the name of the man was Nabal and the name of his wife Abigail, and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance. But the man was churlish and evil in his doings, and he was of the house of Caleb. (1Sam.25:3)

Your call to the office of the husbandhood is principally a call to provide spiritual leadership to your wife and children. Much more than provide what they will eat, drink or wear, their spiritual well-being is most important to you. And you cannot provide spiritual leadership if you are not spiritual. That was the case with Nabal. The Bible describes him as churlish, a man that is ill-mannered which almost cost him his life before his wife intervened, and he was saved.

Now, Jesus said these words as regards the importance of being spiritual. It is written, man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. (Matt.4:4). You must understand that true measure of your worthy is not in the abundance of the material things you have but in the quality of the spiritual leadership you provide for your wife and children. But why is spiritual leadership my core function as the head of my family? It is because you are first a spiritual entity. When God made you, He breath into you His life and you became a living soul (Gen.2:7). The Scripture says, “there is a spirit in man…..”(Job 32:8). The second reason is that everything you see in the physical has been concluded in the spirit realm. So, if you can develop your spiritual authority, you will become a positive influence in the lives of your wife and children.

As the good shepherd, you must recognize that your first task is to lead your wife and children in the way and admonition of the Lord. You are to teach them the word of God both in words and in practice. You are to guide them through the Bible and explain the context of Scriptures to them. But you must, first, learn how to lead yourself spiritually. And for you to do that you must cultivate the following discipline. Firstly, you must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ by accepting Him as Your Lord and Personal Saviour. Secondly, you must acknowledge His Lordship over everything that you know or have. Thirdly, you must take delight in studying the Bible by the help of the Person of the Holy Spirit. This is because, the more of His revealed word you have in your heart, the more you experience true transformation in your life. Fourthly, you engage the power of prayer so that you can understand the Scriptures and do what God commands you to do. And as you grow spiritually, you then teach your sheep and empower them to become spiritual.

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, give me understanding by Your word.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to delight in Your word.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, build me up spiritually and empower me to build my wife and children.

I give attention to the word of God and by it, I develop my spirit man so that I can build that of my wife and children because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen
