Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him and desiring a certain thing of him. And he said unto her, what wilt thou? She saith unto him, grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. But Jesus answered and said, ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, we are able. And he said unto them, ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with, but to sit on my right hand and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my father (Matt.20:20-23)
The Scripture tells of a mother who approaches Jesus Christ and requests something significant for her sons. She wants a change of position for her sons. But Jesus asked both the mother and her children one important question. Jesus asks, “Can you drink of the cup that I drink of, and can you be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? Jesus Christ literally asks them whether they are ready for the responsibilities that come with the position they desire.
The message, therefore, for you is that being the husbandman comes with enormous responsibility, and it is your diligent commitment to discharging your responsibilities as the man, husband, and father that makes you the good and godly husbandman.
Being a husbandman is a desirable office because God created it for your good (Gen.2:14-25, 1Tim3:1-2). The day you accept to become the husbandman by reason of marriage to your wife and by the gift of children to you from God, you are baptized into covenant demands. Remember, Jesus accepted to go to rescue humanity from eternal damnation while in heaven with God in heaven. And the moment He came to earth, He was baptized to the mission of saving mankind from sin and restoring man to God.
Now, what are you baptized into as the husbandman that you must discharge to qualify to be called the good and godly vessel?
You are baptized into fruitfulness, compassion, mercy, holiness, hospitality, the spirit of the fear of the Lord, a provider, a protector, a giver, a life of sacrifice, and much more. These are all the virtues that God wants you to have and express as the good and godly man, husband, and father to your wife and your children.
The call to husband-hood is not cheap talk. It is a call for hard work and sacrifices. Therefore, be prepared to pay the price because that is what makes for the good and godly husbandman.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to be responsible as the man, husband, and father.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to do Your will as the husbandman.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me not to give up as the man, husband, and father.
FAITH CONFESSION
I drink of the cup of Jesus Christ, and I am baptized with the baptism of Jesus Christ, and by it I take full responsibility to do all that God commands me to do as the man, husband, and father, because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
