The prayer of Jabez is total. It covers every area of the husbandman. And so as the head of your family, you must be acquainted with the style of his prayer because it will move God on your behalf. Jabez remains a striking example of how husbands are to intercede for themselves and their families. This was a man who had unfavourable circumstances around his life and family. His mother gave birth to him in sorrow. His name and that of his family was an embodiment of sorrow. But one day, he reacted to his negative identity. He desired a change. He wanted to move his family forward just the same way you have been longing to make the needed positive changes in the lives of your wife and children. So, he prayed. And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me. AND GOD GRANTED HIM THAT WHICH HE REQUESTED. God answered him and made him more honourable than his brethren and his family name changed.
Now when you consider the enormous responsibilities that husbands carry, supernatural accelerated movement becomes a demand. You need supernatural intervention to be free from spells and enchantment; from barrenness, addictions, failures, sickness and diseases. From our scripture today, one of the major weapons this husband used in moving his family forward was prayer-effectual fervent prayer. Jabez prayed a short but precise prayer that terminated every form of stagnation in his life and by extension his family.
As the head of the family, your desire to see your children make progress in every area of their lives is in line with the will of God. Your desire to see your wife increase on all sides and be blessed also agrees with the will of God. But these desires will not happen. You have to make it happen by engaging the powerful tool of prayer. Prayer changes everything and anything. Prayer recreates the destiny of any husband who dares to engage it, notwithstanding the challenges. Yours may be financial dryness. It may even be stagnation in your marriage life or addiction to drugs or unhealthy habits. It may even be consistent quarrels with your wife and children. Whatever it is, the effectual fervent prayer of the righteous availeth much. You can’t pray casually and expect a dramatic change. You are in a spiritual warfare that requires you to be fervent in prayers. Don’t pray a casual prayer if you don’t want your wife and children to end up as casualties. Your fervent prayer as the spiritual leader of your sheepfold can stir up the needed changes that you crave for in the lives of your wife and children. You can also move your wife and children forward, just as Jabez did. Pray without ceasing because prayers will not hurt you but will make a way for you.
· Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to pray like Jabez did for the sake of my sheep.
· Father, in the Name of Jesus, baptize me with higher grace to pray for my sheep.
· Father, in the Name of Jesus, hear me when I call and change the story of my sheep for good.
I pray effectively for my wife and children because that is what makes me a good and godly husband in Jesus Name. Amen.
